Shopify, WooCommerce or Wix: which one for you

We get the question every week, and the right answer depends on three things only: your catalog, who will maintain the site, and how much you will pay monthly to stop thinking about it.

The questions that decide, and none are technical

  • How many products, and how often do they change?
Ten stable products and five thousand SKUs moving daily do not call for the same tool.
  • Who maintains the site in two years?
A hosted solution updates itself. A self-hosted one needs someone looking after it, and that someone costs more than the subscription saved.
  • What has to plug into it?
Accounting, inventory, point of sale, shipping. The platform that already speaks to your tools saves you months.
  • What does it cost once you grow?
The entry price means nothing. What matters is the bill when you do ten times today's volume.

What we actually think

  • 01
    Shopify, for most retailers here
Hosted, self-updating, payments and shipping solved up front. We are a Shopify partner and it is what we recommend most often, because it breaks the least.
  • 02
WooCommerce, when WordPress already exists and works
Sensible if you have a living WordPress site and someone to maintain it. Less so from scratch: you inherit the upkeep of two systems.
  • 03
Wix and Squarespace, for a very small catalog
Quick to set up and enough for a few products. They strain when the catalog grows or a specific integration is needed.
  • 04
    A custom build, almost never
Barring a genuinely unusual business model, building your own commerce engine costs more to maintain than to build.

Frequently asked

The questions we get most before kicking off.

Shopify or WooCommerce?
Shopify if you want to sell and not think about infrastructure: hosting, security and updates are included. WooCommerce if you already run WordPress, have someone to maintain it, and a specific need that plugins solve better. WooCommerce's hidden cost is maintenance, not licensing.
Wix or Shopify?
Wix suits a few products on a mostly brochure site. As soon as commerce becomes the core of the business, Shopify has the ecosystem, apps and integrations Wix does not.
Can you change platform later?
Yes, and it happens regularly. Products, customers and orders migrate. What usually gets lost is URLs and search rankings, when nobody prepares the redirects. That is the part not to improvise.
Do you push Shopify because you are a partner?
We are a Shopify partner and we say so. We also build on other platforms, and we have told clients to stay where they were. A bad platform choice comes back to us as support hours, so we have no interest in making one.
